Science is a systematic enterprise of gathering knowledge. To gather the kind of knowledge that most of us live by each day, a scientific method is conducted. A method like this includes observation, experimentation, measurement, mathematics, and replication. Because of this, science is highly related to numbers.
Science is a very broad subject that is divided into branches. The most common branches of science are biology- the study of life, chemistry- the science of matter and the changes it undergoes, and physics- the study of matter and its motion through space-time. All of these branches use numbers to depict meanings, methods and composition.
Because the world is made up of various compositions, science has been a great help to clearly point out how the things came to be.
In biology, life is being studied piece by piece. The human skeletal system is composed of 206 bones. For every 1000 red blood cells in a human body, there is only about one white cell. The adult heart pumps about 7,500 liters of blood every day. The blue whale can produce the loudest sound produced by an animal - up to 188 decibels - and detected as far away as 853 kms (530mi).
When it comes to chemistry, elements are determined by their atomic numbers, atomic mass and groups. Hydrogen's symbol is H. Its atomic number is 1 and its atomic weight is 1.00794. When 2 hydrogen atoms are combined through covalent bond with 1 oxygen atom, it forms into H2O, commonly called water.
Physics talk about energy, speed and velocity. Speed is acquired when distance is divided over time. The fastest speed is the speed of light where vacuum c = 299,792,458 meters per second, approximately 1079 million kilometers (671 million miles) per hour.
Without numbers, scientist will not have the privilege of study, experimentation and discovery.
