プロペシアは、体内で男性ホルモンのテストステロンがジヒドロテストステロン（DHT）に変化するのを妨げます。プロペシアは、頭頂部および前頭皮部の男性型脱毛症の治療に使われています。男性型脱毛症とは、頭皮の毛髪がだんだん薄くなるなど一般的によく知られる症状です。生え際からの後退および／または頭頂部が薄くなるなどが一般的です。プロペシアは、男性に限定して使用されるもので、女性や小児に利用されるものではありません。またプロペシアは、本医薬ガイドに記載されている目的以外にも利用されています。

Finasteride under the US brand name Propecia is an effective treatment for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) in low doses and prostate cancer in higher doses. This generic drug inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. In addition, Propecia (Finasteride) is accepted in many countries for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia or male-pattern baldness in adult men only. It is used for male-pattern hair loss on the vertex and the front mid-scalp area.
